Rates for an oud player in Dubai depend on three things: how many musicians, how long they play, and whether the booking is a one-off or a recurring residency. A solo oud player for two sets of 30 minutes sits at the lower end of the range. Add a singer or a qanun player and the price roughly doubles, since you are now booking two or three musicians plus more sound equipment.

These figures assume standard sound provided by the venue or a small PA we bring. Add roughly AED 800 to 1,500 if we need to supply a full sound system, and add a travel fee for bookings in Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah or outside the main event corridor. 3. Formats

Solo oud suits background dinner music, a majlis, or a hotel lobby where you want ambience without a stage moment. It reads as understated and classy, and it never competes with conversation.

Oud and vocalist works for weddings where a client wants recognisable tarab songs, Fairuz, Umm Kulthum, Abdel Halim Hafez, alongside modern Khaleeji hits, and wants guests to actually listen rather than just have music in the background. Add qanun for a fuller classical Arabic sound, this is the instrument that gives that shimmering, layered tone you hear on old recordings. A full trio with percussion, usually a riq or darbuka, is the choice for a proper reception set or a gala dinner entrance where the music needs to carry across a large room.

4. Weddings

Weddings are the single biggest driver of oud bookings in Dubai. The instrument fits both the Arabic majlis segment, where families are seated separately and want traditional music, and the western style reception, where an oud duo plays during canapés before the band or DJ takes over. A typical wedding booking runs two sets of 30 minutes: one during the majlis or cocktail hour, one during dinner, with the band or DJ handling the rest of the night.

5. Abu Dhabi and Sharjah

Booking an oud player in Abu Dhabi follows the same pricing structure as Dubai, with venues like Emirates Palace and the Yas Island hotels running slightly different sound and staging requirements than Dubai hotels. Abu Dhabi also has a much heavier calendar around National Day in December, when government and semi-government events push demand for Khaleeji and oud acts up sharply, book that window at least three to four weeks ahead rather than the usual few days.

Sharjah events tend to lean more culturally conservative than Dubai, oud and qanun acoustic sets without amplified vocals are often the preferred choice for government or family events there, and dress code guidance for musicians should be confirmed with the client in advance.

6. Female performers

The qanun, a trapezoidal plucked zither, provides the melodic runs and ornamentation while the oud carries the rhythm and harmonic base. This pairing is requested most often for gala dinners, cultural events, embassy functions, and weddings where the family specifically wants a traditional tarab sound rather than a contemporary Khaleeji set.

8. Permits and rules

Permits, Ramadan timing and cultural notes

Live music in a public venue in Dubai generally needs a DET entertainment permit (formerly issued under DTCM), arranged by the venue or by us on your behalf, this is separate from the hotel's own internal NOC which most five star hotels already hold for their ballrooms and F&B outlets. Private villa or majlis events usually do not need a separate permit, but confirm this if the guest count is large or the event is open to the public in any way. Abu Dhabi events fall under DCT approval instead of DET, the process is similar but the application sits with a different authority.

During Ramadan, all live performances shift to after iftar, typically starting from around 8:30pm through to close, and volume levels are kept lower out of respect for the fasting period. Book Ramadan and Eid tent performances at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead, this is the single busiest period of the year for oud and Khaleeji acts in the UAE and demand outstrips supply fast. 9. Booking

What goes wrong and how to avoid it

The most common issue outside of format mismatch is repertoire assumptions. Clients sometimes expect an oud player to know every requested song without providing a list in advance. Send your top requested songs and any must-avoid genres at least a week before the event so the musician can prepare, most oud players work from a large standing repertoire of classical and Khaleeji staples but specific modern requests need notice.

The second issue is costume and seating. Oud players typically wear a formal thobe, kandura, or a tailored black suit depending on the tone of the event, confirm this with us so the musician arrives dressed correctly, and make sure the venue has a chair and a small side table or stand ready, most oud players play seated and need a stable surface for sheet music or a tuner.
