Before participating in the mask decoration class, our skilled mask makers will take visitors on a historical tour of Venice to teach them about the city's origins in the creation and wearing of masks. People have worn masks in Venice every day throughout history, primarily to protect their privacy as they went about their daily lives there, but they have also been used to commit crimes covertly. The number of crimes committed by people using masks increased to the point where the city's Doge outlawed them, with Carnival being the lone exception.
Masks have been used for a variety of purposes over the years, but their traditional construction has not changed. In this Venetian mask making session, artisans will be on hand to instruct participants on the proper technique for embellishing a papier-mch base. Participants can use a variety of supplies, including richly coloured fabrics, lace, Swarovski crystals, beads, and sequins, to customise the look of the base of their papier-mвchй masks. Each authentic, personalised Venetian mask will be available for purchase from its manufacturer to take home as a wonderful memento of this lovely city.
